president obama and the democrats campaigned on, this past election cycle and by the way he won, was exactly this fall back plan or the small piece of tax cuts being extended for 98% of american families and 97% of small businesses. there is a bill in the senate sitting there right now that the house could actually vote on. they don't need to wait for anything to pass the senate. the house could call a vote on it right now and 98% of america's families could see protection of their tax cuts extended. so i think that is a strong position for the democrats. they won on this. the majority of american people agree that the 2% of the wealthiest in this country can afford to pay a little bit more. most wealthy people agree with that. >> you believe president and leaders prefer going over the cliff so they can raise taxes and blame the g.o.p. but republicans have the option of locking in tax cuts for most americans right now. >> i think the president does want to do that because as you said he can increase taxes, point the finger at the republicans but we need to have spending cuts. this is not an

, but there is no substance of an agreement. >> what we have are on the obama side, you have an election that pretty much took a mandate, if you will where the very issue of taxes was legislated and the americans said they agreed with the president saying that taxes rise for the wealthy and the right wing and the republican party who won by a wide margin in deeply conservative areas. they have a mandate. they are cancelling each other out. they each think they are -- that is why we are frozen. i don't know if it's been that way. the mechanics have been such that they are polarized to the point where it's paralyzing. >> the thing that baffles me and it sort of angers me is the conservative republicans, the president's vote in state after state in the electoral college. it used to be in politics if it was more respect for the voter and the voter speak today, one of the big things they seem to speak out on was this idea that raised taxes on people making $1 million or more. we are at a stand still on that. your sense of things in the house especially. the lack of respect for the voter, this idea that we have thi

they said they wanted to get rid of obama at any cost before the election, i thought it was just campaign rhetoric. but when the debt ceiling came and they said they were prepared to allow the fiscal integrity of the united states of america to go down the tube, that was a game of chicken i've never heard of in all of my years in politics. how much could they hate the man or hate his politics or be so insensitive to the poor? that they would tell the entire world that the united states is not prepared to pay its obligations. and that taught me a lesson which we're learning now. how far are they willing to go to you hurt the united states of america? and when is it not going to be party politics but what is good for our country? >> well, let's listen to senator mcconnell. more of what he has to say. because his words haven't provided much comfort to those who feel that the senate should be serious in its obligation to the american people. let's take a listen. >> as i indicated, the president called me and probably called others last night. my impression is he would like to see if we can mo
